Your smile looks great when you have all your teeth. It’s also why we want you to care for your gums.

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month. That makes this a good time to remind you why healthy gums are an essential part of good oral health.

At Dossett Dental, preventing and treating gum disease are both integral parts of our general dentistry. Knowing that, here is a reminder of some things you should know about periodontal health.

1. Symptoms of Gum Infections

Healthy gums are pink. They also feel firm to the touch, and they don’t bleed when you brush or floss. You might have gum disease if you notice one or more of these symptoms:

  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Gums that feel tender or painful
  • Receding gums
  • Constant bad breath
  • Changes to how your teeth feel together
  • Teeth that feel loose

2. Risks for Other Health Problems

People who have gum disease also are more likely to have other health issues. This includes diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and more, according to the American Dental Association.

3. Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease

Anyone can develop gum disease. However, it is valuable to be aware if you may have a factor or factors that make you more likely to develop a periodontal infection. Be aware of these common risk factors:

  • Family history
  • Using tobacco
  • Being pregnant
  • Having diabetes
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Certain medications
  • Having crooked teeth
